Time with the G Family | West Linn Documentary Family Photographer

With smartphones, GoPros and many other easy options to choose from, I think it’s safe to say that our kids have wayyy more pictures of their childhood than we ever did.  To be fair, our parents had film cameras and it was expensive to develop those rolls of film that may or may not have turned out.  Assuming you could even remember what was on the roll (I may or may not have gone big one day in college by paying for doubles when I dropped off a mysterious roll of film only to find out a week later that my roommate had borrowed my camera to take pictures of her cats sleeping – not nearly the exciting pictures I was hoping for, but it was a nice present for her, I suppose).

But do you know what I have even less of from my childhood than printed pictures of myself?  Pictures of me with my parents.  Like many families, my mom was the one snapping most of the pictures and was rarely in front of the camera herself.  And I would LOVE to have more pictures with her!

And that is one thing that I’m not sure has changed much, even with the digital format of pictures today.  With the exception of selfies with your kids, how often are you truly in front of the camera with them?  This is why I’ve hired photographers to photograph me with my family in addition to practicing my skills with self portraits.  And this is why I love to not just focus on the kids when I photograph other families, but also the parents and their interactions with their kids.

Capturing those interactions is one reason I love the documentary style of family sessions so much.  I love that you can feel comfortable in your own home to just be you!  And it’s fun for the kids because you’ve set aside this time to just play and be a family (while I capture that time for you) without chores or other responsibilities getting in the way.

And with that, I would love to share some photos I took of my dear friend Mary and her family when we were visiting them in California.  As a photographer herself, I took it upon myself to try and capture moments between her and her kids for her as I was able.  Aren’t they just the most adorable family??
